Houseplant humidity
Brown leaf tips in winter? The heating is drying out the air, and your Calathea feels it first.
Why winter air is so dry
Cold outdoor air holds very little water. When it comes inside and is heated, its relative humidity drops sharply:
| Outside, 80 % RH | Heated to 21 °C |
|---|---|
| 10 °C | 40 % |
| 0 °C | 20 % |
| −5 °C | 14 % |
Same water content, calculated with the Magnus formula. Cooking, showers and people add some moisture back.
What your plants feel
Plants don’t care about the percentage, they feel how hard the air pulls water from their leaves: the VPD. At 21 °C:
| Humidity | VPD | For |
|---|---|---|
| 30 % | 1.74 kPa | Cacti, succulents |
| 40 % | 1.49 kPa | Most robust houseplants |
| 50 % | 1.24 kPa | Monstera, philodendron, pothos |
| 60 % | 0.99 kPa | Calathea, ferns, many orchids |
Thin-leaved tropical plants evolved in humid forests. At a high VPD they lose water faster than their roots can replace it. Brown tips and crispy edges are the result.
What actually helps
- A humidifier is the only thing that raises room humidity reliably. Put it near the plants, not right next to a cold window.
- Group plants together. They share the moisture they transpire.
- A plant cabinet or terrarium for the really fussy ones.
- Move plants away from radiators. The air right above them is the driest in the room.
Misting feels helpful but only raises humidity for minutes, and wet leaves in cool, still air invite fungal spots.
Don’t overdo it
Humid air meets cold surfaces at the window and outer walls. At 21 °C the dew point is about 10 °C at 50 % and 13 °C at 60 % humidity. A cold window frame can easily be colder than that, and mold follows. In winter, around 45–55 % is a good compromise for plants and walls. More on that: dew point & mold.
Measure, don’t guess
A cheap hygrometer near your plants tells you more than any care tag. Just check it’s accurate first: how to calibrate a hygrometer.
Questions growers ask
What humidity do houseplants need?
Most robust houseplants are fine at 40–50 %. Thin-leaved tropical plants like Calathea, ferns and many orchids prefer around 60 %. Cacti and succulents are happy at 30–40 %.
Why do my plants get brown tips in winter?
Heated winter air is very dry, often 20–40 % humidity. Thin-leaved tropical plants lose water through their leaves faster than their roots can replace it, and the leaf tips dry out first.
Does misting raise humidity?
Only for a few minutes. A humidifier, grouping plants or a plant cabinet raise humidity much more reliably.
Can humidity be too high in my apartment?
Yes. In winter, humidity above about 60 % can condense on cold windows and outer walls and cause mold. Around 45–55 % is a good compromise for plants and walls.
